Academic and Professionalism Committee Overview

The Academic and Professionalism Committee and its three subcommittees are concerned with the academic development of students, in particular:

  • Criteria and processes governing selection,
  • Progression, and
  • Graduation of students in the School of Medicine.

Membership

The committee is composed of members of the three subcommittees. Fifteen members are elected and four are appointed. No more than three voting members from a single department on a single campus may serve simultaneously.

  • Six faculty from basic science departments in Kansas City
  • Six faculty from clinical departments in Kansas City
  • Three faculty from the Wichita campus
  • Four appointed members: One from basic science department in Kansas City, one from clinical department in Kansas City, one from Wichita campus, one from Salina campus
  • Associate Dean for Admissions (ex officio, non-voting)
  • Associate Dean for Student Affairs (ex officio, non-voting)
  • Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Wichita (ex officio, non-voting)
  • Assistant Dean for Student Affairs (ex officio, non-voting)
  • Associate Dean for Cultural Affairs and Diversity (ex officio, non-voting)
  • Direcotr of the Salina Campus (ex officio, non-voting)
  • Seven medical students: one from each academic year on the Kansas City campus, one each from Phase I and Phase II on the Wichita campus, one from the Salina campus*

*Students will be assigned by the Chair to serve on subcommittees.  Four students will sit on the Promotions subcommittee- two from Kansas City, one each from Wichita and Salina. Three students will sit on the Admissions subcomittee. Students serving on subcommittees may vote on matters concerning policy but not on matters concerning specific individuals.

Duties

  • Make recommedations directly to the Executive Dean on matters involving student dissmassals
  • Make recommedations to Faculty Councilon matters that require changes to prerequisite requirements or significant changes to admissions or promotions policy; thos recommednations related to procedures shall be made to the Executive Committee, who in turn will relay appropriately
  • Determine which applicants will be offered acceptance offers to the School of Medicine

Process

The Academic and Professionalism Committee shall meet on a regular basis with a schedule established at a meeting in September. Additional meetings will be held as needed.
