William F. Cathcart-Rake, MD, FACP

Dr. Cathcart-Rake is a native of Kansas (born in the Little Apple), who attended grade school and high school in Southern California and completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Colorado in Boulder before returning to Kansas for medical school. After completing medical school, an internal medicine residency and a clinical pharmacology fellowship at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., he moved to Salina, where he established a practice at the Mowery Clinic in 1979. Currently he devotes much of his time to a medical oncology practice at Tammy Walker Cancer Center. In March 2010 he accepted the position of Director of Undergraduate Medical Curriculum at the new KU School of Medicine campus in Salina.

Lucy Kollhoff
Phase II & Medical Education Administrative Officer

Lucy Kollhoff, a native of Western Kansas, received her bachelor's degree from Fort Hays State University. After working in private industry for several years, she returned to Fort Hays State University to pursue and obtain her master's degree in counseling. She has worked in higher education in the areas of career counseling and coaching, and has been involved in retention, recruitment and placement of students into science, technology, engineering and math careers. She is also a state-certified mediator.

Michael Kollhoff
Medical Education Instruction Specialist

Mike Kollhoff is a native of Kansas (born in Stafford) who grew up in Salina and attended Salina Public Schools K-12. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Antiquities and a Bachelor of Science degree in Science Education from the University of Kansas. He earned his Master of Science in Counseling from Emporia State University. Before becoming a full-time school counselor, he taught high school biology, chemistry and physics. When not at work, he enjoys playing golf, sailing and home-remodeling projects.

Laura Easterday
Phase I & Student Services Senior Coordinator

A Native of Salina, Laura Easterday is the Student Services Coordinator at the KU School of Medicine-Salina. She received her bachelor's degree in Communications and Human Resource Development, along with a certificate in Leadership Studies, from Fort Hays State University in 2008. She worked as a project manager for a small firm in Hays, Kan., for several years before joining the KU School of Medicine-Salina staff in 2011.

Michael Robinson, PhD
Associate Director of Basic Sciences
 

Though he is a native of Great Britain and had not spent much time in Kansas before coming to the KU School of Medicine-Salina, Dr. Robinson has lived in the Midwest for many years, thanks, in part, to the fact that his wife is from Minnesota. He received his PhD in parasite immunology from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. He went on to a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and has held faculty positions at North Dakota State University and North Georgia College & State University. Before coming to Salina, he served as Assistant Dean of Curriculum and Faculty Affairs at Ross University Schoolof Medicine's Clinical Site in Freeport, Grand Bahama, where he was integral to establishing a medical school campus.

Boyd Smith, MD
Lead Preceptor for Pathology - Anatomy Lab Supervisor

A native of Nebraska, Dr. Smith left the Cornhusker state to receive his undergraduate education (BA in Chemistry) at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He returned to the University of Nebraska for medical school before once again leaving for a pathology residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Smith was a staff pathologist for the Salina hospitals and a partner at WPM Pathology Laboratory from 1978 until 2009.

Sara Johnston, MD
Co-Facilitator, Problem-Based Learning Sessions

Dr. Johnston graduated from the University of Kansas with a BA in biology in 1996 and received her MD from KU in 2000. After medical school she completed a residency in family medicine at the Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program in Salina. Dr. Johnston is a board-certified family medicine physician at ComCare.

Scott Owings, MD
Associate Director for Clinical Experiences and Clerkship Director

Dr. Owings received a Bachelor of Science degree from Pittsburg State University and his medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. As a medical student he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed residency at Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Owings is a member of Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians, Kansas Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, Kansas Medical Society, National Rural Health Association, and is vice president of the Saline County Medical Society. He is currently an Associate Director for Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program and Director of the Salina Rural Track Program. Dr. Owings and his wife Melanie, both from Maize, Kansas, have three young children: Olivia, Abram and Beckett. When they are not watching the Jayhawks, they enjoy boating, skiing and spending time with family and friends. Dr. Owings' hobbies include carpentry, fishing, hunting and golf.

Lead preceptor: Henry Reed, MD

Dr. Reed received his undergraduate degree from Fort Hays State University (BS in Mathematics) and his MD from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita and a fellowship in nephrology and hypertension at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. Dr. Reed is a board-certified internist and nephrologist at the Mowery Clinic.

Hospitalist service
Lead preceptor: Jon Richards, MD

A native of Hays, Kan., Dr. Richards completed both his undergraduate (BA in Psychology) and medical studies at the University of Kansas. After an internal medicine internship at Brown University in Rhode Island, he returned to the University of Kansas for his internal medicine residency. Dr. Richards practiced in Phillipsburg, Kan., from 1976-85 before moving to Salina and joining the Salina Clinic, where he practiced through 2009. Since 2010, Dr. Richards has been a hospitalist at Salina Regional Health Center.

Neurology
Lead preceptor: Trent Davis, MD

Dr. Davis attended Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., before completing medical school at Howard University in Washington, DC. After medical school he completed a medicine internship at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a neurology residency at Howard University, and a fellowship in cerebral vascular diseases at Howard. Dr. Davis served on the staff of Howard University and was in private practice in Southern California prior to moving to Salina in 1999. Dr. Davis is a board-certified neurologist in solo practice at Amber Waves Neurology.

Obstetrics/Gynecology
Lead preceptor: Chris Graber, MD

Dr. Graber received his undergraduate degree from Bethel College in North Newton, Kan., with a quadruple major: biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics. He received his MD from the University of Kansas. He completed his residency in Ob-Gyn at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita in 2009 and is a board-certified Ob-Gyn currently practicing at Salina Women's Clinic.

Pediatrics
Lead preceptor: Alisa Bridge, MD

Dr. Bridge received a BA in cellular biology from the University of Kansas and a MS in zoology from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan. She worked as a research assistant at the Women's Research Institute at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita for several years before entering medical school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After medical school, Dr. Bridge completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Bridge is a board-certified pediatrician currently practicing at the Mowery Clinic.

Co-Assistant Clerkship Director : Veronica L. Amey, MD

Dr. Amey completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Colorado in Boulder and received her M.D. degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Following medical school Dr. Amey completed a psychiatry residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in Wichita, serving as Chief Resident during final year of training. She joined Salina Regional Health Center as a staff psychiatrist in January 2013.

Co-Lead preceptor: George Jerkovich, MD

A native of Croatia, Dr. Jerkovich immigrated to the United States with his family as a young child. He attended the University of Kansas for his undergraduate degree (BA in English, Psychology, and Human Biology) and MD. After medical school, Dr. Jerkovich completed a psychiatry residency at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., and a fellowship in clinical psychopharmacology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita. Dr. Jerkovich has been engaged in the practice of psychiatry in Salina since 1989.

Lead preceptor: Chris Rupe, MD

Christopher Rupe did his undergraduate studies at KU-Lawrence (BA in Human Biology and Psychology) and received his MD from KU in 2004. After completing a general surgery residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita he joined the Mowery Clinic, where he has a practice in general, vascular and laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Rupe is a board-certified general surgeon and is married to Abbey.

Dr. Johnson attended Kansas State University in Manhattan before entering pharmacy school at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where he received his BS in Pharmacy. Not content with being a pharmacist, Dr. Johnson entered medical school at KU and received his MD in 1992. He completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita in 1997. Dr. Johnson is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon currently practicing at the Orthopedic Sports Health Clinic of Salina.

Dr. Long joined the Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program as Associate Director in 2011. Dr. Long received a B.S. in Biology Sciences at Kansas State University in 1995 and received her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Kansas City in May of 1999. She completed her residency training at the Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program in 2002. She has been practicing medicine in a rural community for the last 8 ½ years. Dr. Long enjoys the full spectrum of family medicine but has a special interest in women and children's health. Dr. Long is currently a member of AAFP, KAFP, AMA and the Saline County Medical Society.

Lead Preceptor: Brian Pavey, DO, MS

A native of the state of Washington, Dr. Pavey graduated from Wichita State University in 1995 with a B.A. in biochemistry. Subsequently, he did graduate work at the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center, receiving an M.S. in Biomedical Science-Biochemistry. Dr. Pavey received is D.O. degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in 2004, followed by an internal medicine residency and a nephrology fellowship at the University of Missouri Hospitals and Clinics in Columbia, Missouri. Dr. Pavey has been in private practice at the Mowery Clinic in Salina since 2009, specializing in nephrology, hypertension, critical care, and general internal medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine and nephrology.
