June 2013

Congratulations to WIMS member Sandy Billinger, PT, PhD. and her son, Michael!  They are back in Kansas City after completeing a 23 day, 570 mile walk across the state of Kansas.  They undertook their journey to raise funds to benefit stroke research and bring awareness to a wothwhile cause.  For thier efforts, Dr. Billinger and Michael raised close to $15,000.00!  The official "End of Walk Celebration" took place on Friday, June 7 at 39th and Stateline, next to the medical center. 

Kudos to Carol Fabian, MD, co-leader for the KU Cancer Center's Cancer Program who was recently named the "Komen Kansas City Legacy Promise Award" reciient for 2013. Dr. Fabian directs the Breast Cancer Prevention and Survivorship Centers at the KU Cancer Center where she had her team have conducted numerous early phase prevention trials focusing on reducing breast cancer while improving overall health and quality of life.

Congratulations to WIMS member Monica Kyrylo.  Monica has been accepted to participate in the Mid Career, American Psychological (APA) Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology Leadership Institute.

Congratulations to WIMS member Debra Sullivan for her study: Second life and weight loss.
Research finds Second Life program can help with weight loss and maintenance. A study by Debra Sullivan, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition, used Second Life's three-dimensional, virtual reality environment to study both weight loss and maintenance

Christine Daley, Ph.D., has been elected to Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology.

Geri Neuberger, RN, MN, EdD, APRN, received the Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals (ARHP) President's Award for 2012.

Judith Warren, Ph.D., RN, BC, FAAN, FACMI, has received the 2012 American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Virginia K. Saba Informatics Award.

TWO WIMS Executive Council members receive recognition

  • Pam Shaw, M.D., professor of pediatrics, received the Ruth Bohan Teaching Professorship at the School of Medicine Annual Faculty Retreat.

  • Janet Pierce, DSN, APRN has been selected as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She investigates different pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in human illness, such as hemorrhagic shock and diaphragm fatigue.


November 2012

CupertinoAna Paula Cupertino, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, has been named a recipeint of the Carlos F. Cortes Award Humanitarian of the Year award by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City. This award is presented to an individual who exemplifies the traits of volunteering, community service and tireless dedication to the well-being of the Hispanic community. Cupertino is the director of Juntos, which seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge to eliminate health disparities in the underserved Latino communities in Kansas.

Congratulations to Dr. Julie Wei, MD on publishing her book, A Healthier Wei - Reclaiming Health for Your Misdiagnosed and Overmedicated Child, available in print late November 2012. The book will be available for order online at www.ahealthierwei.com.

Rita Clifford, RN, Ph.D., associate dean for community engagement, has been named as one of the Women of Distinction for 2012-2013 by KU's Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center. The award recognizes KU women students, staff, facult, and alumnae for their achievements and contributions to KU and/or the community, serving as role models and challenging gender stereotypes.

Nancy Dunton, Ph.D., FAAN, a research professor with the School of Nursing, has been awarded the Research Mentor Award by the AcademyHealth organization's Interdisciplinary Research Group on Nursing Issues. The group's mission is to support the development of health services research that focuses on nursing practice, workforce and delivery of care. The award recognizes Dr. Dunton's contributions, as a senior scientist, to the career development of young investigators who are engaged in research focused on interdisciplinary health services research on nursing issues.

Carol Smith, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, a professor of nursing, was inducted into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame by Sigma Theta Tau, Int. in Brisbane, Australia, on Aug. 2. You can read more here.

Christie Befort, Ph.D., assistant professor of preventative medicine and public health drew regional attention for her new study which finds that Americans living in rural areas are more likely to be obese than city dwellers. Published in the National Rural Health Association's Fall 2012 Journal of Rural Health, the study indicates that residential location may play an important role in the obesity epidemic.


May 2012

Congratulations to Giulia Bonaminio, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Medical Education. Dr. Bonaminio has been named a fellow by the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine. The national leadership program is dedicated to preparing senior women faculty for positions of leadership at academic health centers.

Kudos to Beth Levant, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutics! Dr. Levant has received the Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Classroom Teaching. She was honored at Commencement for her distinguished work in the classroom during the 2011-2012 academic year.

KUDOS to Lyndsey Kilgore, a second year medical student, who received the Hagen Award to work with Women in Medicine and Science to create an annual Medical and Science Career Fair for high school and college students. The goal of the career fair will be to allow female high school seniors and college freshmen the opportunity to come to KUMC and learn about ALL of the opportunities that are offered in the various medical, professional and science programs. Lyndsey's goal is to make the career fair an annual event to help empower future female leaders in medicine and science in Kansas and across the country.


February 2012

Congratulations to Dr. Susan K. Pingleton, who is the Joy McCann Professor of Women in Medicine and Science and the Associate Dean, Continuing Medical Education at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. The Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine (FHWIM) has appointed Dr. Pingleton to their Board of Trustees. The Foundation's mission is to promote the history of women in medicine and the medical sciences on a national and international level.

Julie Wei, MD, associate professor of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, was awarded the George L. Adams, MD Young Faculty Award by the Middle Section of the Triological Society. She was recognized at the Annual Combined Sections Meeting of this society in Miami Beach, Florida in January of 2012. This award is given to an academic physician in honor of Dr. George Adams, former chair of otolaryngology at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Wei's award citation reads: "In recognition of excellence in research, clinical care, and teaching - this honor was created to perpetuate the ideals of the great clinician, teacher, and mentor for whom it was named and to bestow upon a worthy recipient the responsibility of furthering the highest standards of perfection in the study, teaching, and practice of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery." This award is given to a faculty who is an active fellow of the society and must be younger than 45 years of age. Active fellowship in the Triological Society brings the distinction of being elected to the most prestigious society in Otolaryngology, and is achieved by presenting a thesis in the field of otolaryngology considered acceptable for a panel of peers. At this meeting Dr. Julie Wei presented her research thesis, "The Safety and Efficacy of Once Daily Nasal Irrigation for the Treatment of Pediatric Chronic Rhinosinusitis", which won the "With Distinction" Award from this Society.
